India is home to so many rivers which includes both perennial as well as seasonal in nature. Northern rivers have their origin from the Himalayas and flow throughout the year. The major rivers in the northern half of India include one of the largest rivers of the world, namely the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and the Indus. Northern rivers are at youth stage of their formation and form one of the largest deltas of the world. Due to the youth stage of the rivers, the basin is prone to floods every year. The southern rivers are mostly seasonal and flow during the monsoon season. Major rivers mostly drain into the Bay of Bengal. The southern rivers do not form a delta and are at the old age of their formation.
Indian rivers are also home to one of the oldest civilization of the world.
